From Mumbai to Hollywood: Anup Kulkarni’s Visual Journey on the American Bhau Podcast

In our latest episode of the American Bhau Podcast, we sat down with Anup Kulkarni, a talented Cinematographer and VFX artist who has made a significant mark in the global film industry. From his roots in Mumbai to working on Oscar-winning projects like Life of Pi and Thor, Anup’s journey is a testament to the power of passion, persistence, and technical expertise.

Early Spark and Technical Foundation

Anup’s fascination with the world of visual storytelling began early, sparked by iconic Hollywood blockbusters like Jurassic Park and The Matrix. These films ignited a curiosity about how technology could be used to enhance storytelling.

Interestingly, Anup’s formal education was in Physics. While he initially pursued it to satisfy his father’s wish for a degree, his true interest lay in the intersection of science and art. He supplemented his academic studies with a professional diploma in 3D Animation and VFX from MAAC, eventually specializing in Motion Pictures and 3D Camera Tracking.

Navigating the Hollywood Landscape

Anup moved to the U.S. to further his education, completing a one-year conservatory program in Cinematography in Los Angeles. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the history of filmmaking and networking within the industry.

“You need to spend time in the industry you want to be in. Learn the history, watch international films, and start building your network.” — Anup Kulkarni

His first major project in Hollywood was a collaborative effort with his roommate, Aditya Patwardhan. This short film, set during World War II, eventually screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, providing Anup with valuable international exposure.

The Craft of Cinematography

Anup shared fascinating insights into the technical and creative aspects of his work:

  • Equipment: While he started with a Nikon D90 for wildlife photography in India, he now works with high-end production cameras like Arri Alexa Mini, Arri 35, and Red, depending on the project’s needs.
  • Challenges: He recounted the complexities of shooting with live animals, such as the deer in his recent project Dead Deer High. Coordinating lighting, camera angles, and animal behavior requires meticulous planning and a deep understanding of the craft.
  • The Power of Collaboration: Anup highlights that filmmaking is a team effort. Having your own gear (cameras, lenses, lights) can be a significant advantage for independent filmmakers, as it simplifies logistics for producers.

Advice for Aspiring Filmmakers

For those looking to break into the industry, Anup offers sound advice:

  1. Stay Curious: Always be open to learning new technologies and techniques. The industry is constantly evolving, with advancements in motion capture and 3D software.
  2. Be Patient: Building a career in film takes time and persistence. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and seek out mentors.
  3. Know Your Craft: Deepen your technical knowledge and understand the “why” behind your creative choices.
  4. Embrace the Process: Every project is a learning experience. Treat every task with the same level of dedication and passion.

The Changing Face of Film Festivals

Anup spoke about the significance of festivals like South by Southwest (SXSW), which have evolved into massive cultural events encompassing film, music, technology, and media. These platforms are crucial for independent filmmakers to find producers, raise funds, and connect with a global audience.

Anup Kulkarni’s story is an inspiration for anyone dreaming of a career in the creative arts. His journey from a Physics student in Mumbai to a successful cinematographer in Hollywood shows that with the right mix of technical skill and artistic vision, the possibilities are endless.
